I guess im terrified of labs simply because at my college, another person got burned and died. Must i be frightened?? I have no concept what occurs in astronomy course?

If you do plan to go to grad school in astronomy or astrophysics, major in physics in college. Math, astronomy, and computer science are also useful, but physics is essential. U of A, Wisconsin, and Amherst have the best programs of the schools you mentioned – go to one of those. Personally, I’d go with U of A, they have a top-10 astro grad program, so it shouldn’t be too hard to get into another top school for grad school from there. Spend your summers doing research projects either at U of A or through REU programs.

You’ll probably will go out at night and do some observing. Maybe you’ll check out Saturn and her rings. Does your school have an observatory? I wouldn’t worry about an astronomy lab.

A lab class doesn’t necessarily mean it takes place in a lab, what it means is that there is more than just book work involved. In an astronomy lab you go outside and look at the stars or go to an observatory and look through the big telescope. You have nothing to worry about as long as you aren’t afraid of the dark.

You could burn yourself on some dry ice if you school has a cooled spectroscope. Wear gloves, don’t lick the ice, use some common sense.
No horseplay.
If someone got burned and died, its unlikely that they were following ANY safety guidelines. I monitored Freshmen Chem in college for a year, keeping the jocks and cheerleaders from killing themselves when they didn’t read the precautions on their experiment sheets.

Astronomy class can’t hurt you. The worst you may experience is going on a field trip out to a mountain to view some stars, then get rained on, maybe a snow storm after that, got burried under 7 foot of snow, stuck for a week and have no food, got frost bites and forced to chop off your toes…. etc. Nothing to worry about.
