What would be a handful of great on the web courses to understand about Astronomy?
Question by Curtis K: What would be a couple of beneficial on the internet programs to learn about Astronomy?
Make sure you if you could offer hyperlinks. Also if there are any excellent totally free programs please let me know.
I know the essentials, but i want to master much extra. A program that addresses a wide discipline concerning astronomy would be fantastic. Any suggestions?

Not seriously. I did a search a although ago (few of years, truly). Didn’t genuinely come up with a lot of anything at all over and above the easy stuff. The only set of free courses that were interesting was from challenge CLEA.

Question by Alzorg: What can i be expecting in an intro to astronomy class?
Heya. I’m going to be taking an intro to astronomy course future semester in school. The course description genuinely only said a thing along the lines of “will introduce the college student to astronomy.” It did say it doesn’t fill a lab requirement even though, so i guess no star gazing.
Has any individual taken a course like this ahead of? What would i most most likely know in this class? Thanks for any info.

check out websites for your local community colleges, a lot of them offer webcourses and you would want to start with an Intro to Astronomy which usually don’t require pre-requisites and many of them offer courses for non-degree seeking students at a discount.
Here’s an example from a community college it’s a pdf of their catalog and if you look at p143 you’ll see the Astronomy courses offered:

MIT puts a great deal of their course materials online for free – you won’t get any credit from following along, but you can’t get that for free anyway.

You can probably check out some of the Teaching Company DVD sets from your public library.

Try nasa.gov, the official nasa site also google Hubble Telescope or any astronomy, astrophysics or cosmology term or theory (eg. red shift, black hole, cosmological constant, inflaton, etc.) Also if you are at a site and see a term you don’t understand, do a search of that term.
My own best recommendation though is to subscribe to my favorite magazine: Astronomy Magazine. You can go to their website, astronomy.com, or next time you are in a book store, pharmacy or the library, bet a copy of the magazine, and take one of the subscription mailers and send it in.
Other good sites are sciam.com the Scientific American site, Stanford.edu, caltec.edu, mit.edu.
Also go the your library and the science section, for astronomy, cosmology and/or physics.

The professor will usually introduce you to the course material, syllabus, etc.
Then, he’ll give a background on the universe, the galaxy, the solar system, and such.

You can expect tons of pain and suffering along with the loss of self esteem and horribel relationships that will haunt you for ever.

If your lecturer is respectable the class will be a fairly dry but information-laden experience where you will come face to face with some real science that will prompt you to think further about the subject and perhaps go on to enjoy astronomy for the term of your natural life.
Otherwise I shudder to think. Perhaps do some enquiries first to see what you can expect. Forewarned is forearmed.

It really does depend on the instructor, but the class should cover the basics of astronomy, history, planets, stars, galaxies, nebulae and so on. You might have an opportunity to go out for an evening observing or go to a planetarium.
