Query by l.kinoshita: Are astronomy groups shifting with the rise of the World wide web?
I’m searching for examples of non-regular astronomy clubs, wherever there are no bylaws, no annual dues and no formal construction. However they have energetic members, frequently scheduled activities and offer/trade products, just like conventional clubs.

Link to a software that allows sky viewing in multiple dimensions, like Celestia, Universe Sandbox or Stellarium.
Interactive games about top astronomers. Video files. Audio files.
Informative games with telescope (like simulations of each one).
Information, of course, about the million things that we know today about astronomy.
One feature that really rocks is Myth and Fact. Compare those two in a humorous way, and I bet you’ll get a few hundred viewers in a couple of weeks.
Pictures. Lots and lots of photographs.
Links to Pro sites like NASA, hubblesite.com…

Oh, and a starry backdrop, with stars that glow and explode into site options (like ‘home’, ‘archive’, etc) is a brilliant idea.

Actually astronomers anticipated the internet by years with telex hot lines running from one observatory to another round the world. This system spread the news of supernova 1987A.

But a previous answer about some Yahoo groups is good. You might also find such groups attached to some popular astronomy websites, there is a fairly active forum attached to ‘Galaxy Zoo’.
