No major telescope has been built at least since World War 2 that could be used other than by photography. In fact, I doubt that any professional astronomer has looked through a telescope (except maybe a toy that was being checked as a gift for a child or neighbor) in well over half a century. So any discovery you care to name in that time period, and plenty before then, would involve photography (except for radio astronomy, of course).

Space.com – Sorry to state the obvious, but it’s the site I use to stay current. Also, the New York Times has a very good Space & Cosmos section – http://www.nytimes.com/pages/science/space/
Discovery also has a nice section – http://news.discovery.com/space/

Nasa.gov is very good
Astronomy Pic of the Day has all sort of interesting articles – though there are nearly 20 years of articles, some aren’t quite current.
Astronomy magazine has an on-line website, as does Sky & Telescope – both have cool articles from time to time.
