Issue by king Monkey: In astronomy is Basically knowing the name of stars deemed Expert?
How several stars does a person want to know by name to be thought to be great in astronomy. If it were judged by know-how of names of stars how many would be very good. If you could give a rank by figures make sure you.

I know astronomers who are at the leading of their area who couldn’t title three stars or stage out a one constellation. Understanding all the stars and constellations is genuinely far more of a matter for amateurs than skilled astronomers, who focus a great deal more on the math and physics.

Query by carlo r: Are there any amateur philosophy or astronomy clubs open to the public in melbourne?
There are no pupil clubs that cater to philosophy or astronomy in my uni and i locate it disappointing.I guess its not neat adequate. I’m hoping that there are clubs or teams of individuals that get with each other for these factors in melbourne.

Memorization counts for naught. It’s learning to think that matters.

Backyard astronomers, aka amateur astronomers, frequently use visual, named stars to find their way around the sky with their telescopes. However, professional astronomers more often than not will be interested in objects the human eye can’t even see; this is where astronomical catalogs become important to find some celestial object.

  3. Serendipity Says:

I don’t think simply knowing the names considers you to be good in astronomy but if you knew characteristics about a select few stars or constellations that YOU’RE interested in, then you’d be considered more knowledgeable. Because what’s the point of naming all the stars in the universe if you don’t know a single thing about them and what distinguishes them?
So if you mean professional synonym to knowledgeable then pick something in astronomy that fascinates you and read up about it such as galaxies, a particular constellation, other stars with planets, the closest star to our solar system, etc.

  4. GeoffG Says:

Quite the contrary: many professional astronomers are proud of the fact that they can’t identify any stars. Seriously, most professionals have technicians to find the stars that they study, and usually only know their coordinates, not their names. Amateur astronomers usually know a lot more about stars and constellations than professionals do.

Good answers above! The next question would be— and just exactly what is the CORRECT pronunciation of many of the named stars? Do you speak Arabic?

    Ha! :)

By definition, a professional gets paid for the work they do. Armatures, on they other hand, do it for the love of the hobby.

You coud try the Fabian Society. There are Fabian Societies around the world. They are a mainly left-leaning political think tank that get together to dicuss vaious social, political, economic and other issues of the day. They hold a monthy meeting, as well as regular forums etc. They also produce a regular journal full of essays and discussion papers written by members.
