Problem by Dreamstuff Entity: Hey is it so poor for a Christian woman to be into astronomy?
Of training course, staying into astronomy qualified prospects to realizing the major bang is a fact, and the biblical development myth (Earth staying produced prior to the sun and the stars) is just that.

If they don’t accept the big bang, they will be in for a shocker o.o

Is astronomy a subdivision of earth science, or is it’s quite own branch of science?

No, they are really different branches of science. Astronomy is the examine of celestial objects outdoors of Earth, though Earth science is the review of… the Earth.

bad in what sense? You might discover that the sun doesn’t revolve around the earth like religion used to say

No, not at all. I love astronomy. I am a Christian. You can love science and God.

    No.

If the Big Bang is a fact, why isn’t it producing the results that scientists expect concerning the readings of radio telescopes? Could it be that the idea is too simplistic for the name? And if the expectations aren’t being met, could it be that they aren’t listening to the Big Bang at all?! I mean, it’s not coming out right if it’s the Big Bang.

Question, Why is the Big Bang uniform and cool in temperature, rather than various temperatures and hotter?

There are many Christian scientists, for your information.

  6. Marco The Phoenix Says:

the big bang doesn’t go against anything the Bible says, if anything, the big bang is one proof scientist used when they finally came to the conclusion that the universe had a beginning, which the Bible stated thousands of years ago: “In the BEGINNING, God created the heavens and the earth.” Now they say everything that has a beginning has a cause, and they are still discussing what caused the universe to begin (yeah, keep discussing).
The Bible doesn’t say earth was created before the sun and the starts either, what Bible have you been reading?

    I believe in both.

    Interesting old boy.

But you’re right anyway, the bible obviously isn’t scientifically correct at all anyway. According to Joshua 10:12-13 the sun stood still for longer than it usually did… Since when does the sun move anyway?

Many of the “theories” in astronomy are hypothetical and cannot be tested using scientific method. Ironically, this is one field of science where ideas are postulated and then people go looking for evidence, instead of the other way around (some phenomenon is observed (fact) and then a theory (the explanation) is developed.

Yes, there are phenomenon that can be observed, but for the most part, no one has observed the “big bang” and no one has really observed the “birth” of a star. We know that galaxies are moving in relationship to each other, but to the best of my knowledge, that movement (of all known galaxies) hasn’t been backtracked to any single point of origin.

There’s a lot of exploring to be done in the field of astronomy and a lot of room for people, regardless of their gender or spiritual path.

The big bang isn’t a fact. It has never been observed (the one element that makes an occurrence or event into a fact).

I’m a Christian and I’ve always like the study of astronomy and I believe in the big bang too as far as the Bible interprets it. God is the one who did the big bang you know (or you should know). Things just didn’t fall in order by themselves and it only takes half a brain to see that.God called everything into being and that is in Hebrews 11:3.

  12. Eclectic Heretic Says:

Hell no! The VAST majority of Christians are fine with the Big Bang and all the rest and they accept the fact that Genesis is an allegorical creation myth. Except for the fundamentalists that take the bible literally, of course (and they are in the minority). Genesis was never written as a scientific text. Even the majority of the Jews always knew Genesis was allegorical, it was the early “christians”, who were very dogmatic about everything, that took it literally. And they have mostly gotten over that. Many of them do accept that perhaps “god” had a hand in the natural processes (such as the big bang) that caused the universe to exist, but they see no conflict between science and religion in that.
(btw, there are a number of women astronomers in universities and in NASA and other space exploration projects.)
    Blessings on your Journey!

    Problem:

You can believe in Science and God, but you can’t accept the Bible as literally true and believe Science. Since most people mean by the word “God” the God of the Bible, that will leave you needing to tell us what you mean by the word “God”. This is not a too much a problem since every individual means something different by the word. It is just that once you start down that road it is a short distance to Modern Biblical Criticism and once you have digested those ideas, biology and geology cannot be far behind. You may find that we can simply do without the God idea altogether, since it explains nothing. By the way, it explains nothing and everyone means something different by the word “God”. How does that help us understand it is not just a word. Did you hear about the dyslexic atheist who did not believe in Dog?

    Marco:
Read Genesis again and slowly. “And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.” The sun and the moon are not created until the fourth day. How are you reading this.

  14. Mike Dillon Says:

    Hey Dreamstuff,

For you – this question has been poorly constructed.

You say the Big Bang is ” a Fact” – now we all know that for anything to be classified as a fact you need evidence or proof and it just isn’t a ‘:Fact’ it is still a ‘theory’.

Just because we cannot come up with a better theory doesn’t make something a fact.

Now I actually believe that the Big Bang did occur and it is the way our universe came in to being but who or what started it and did we really just evolve from an embryo – are still questions yet to be answered to my satisfaction.

For those christians who can accept that the Biblical account was phrased in the language and knowledge of the time then maybe they can accept the Big Bang because they will say their God initiated it- can we be so sure they are not right?

However it is the Fundamentalist christians who accept the Bible literally and believe that it is the inerrant word of God inspired by Him, that have problems –

Personally I believe the Bible was written by man and fine tuned over the centuries that followed. Don’t forget that it took till the third century AD before they finally established what books should be included and what rejected, and from what I have read their final decision was not unanimous.

I am no student of the Old Testament BUT one of your other answerers stated that the Bible does not say that the Earth was created before the sun and the stars) – Doesn’t the Bible say “God created the Heavens and the Earth” – I think you have been a little sloppy there mate, unless there is some other verse and I have not read it – are you aware of any?

As for me I am sitting on the fence – neither an avid evolutionist nor a theist
As for me I want some proof that God exists – but I am convinced that if we were created by some ‘force’ then it is not an interventionist God. There is just too much pain and suffering and injustice in the world to believe in a benevolent God.

To answer your opening question – I think it is great for any christian to be into astronomy – in fact I think all christians should study astronomy and if that will lead them to open their minds to explore other points of view that would be great. – unfortunately too many christians are closed minded and will not even entertain that the possibility that the Bible may have been written and inspired by man.
